Getting work from the US or UK is only half the job. The other half is getting paid reliably, at a reasonable cost, without your account being frozen. Many Pakistani freelancers, agencies and online sellers lose money and time here because they pick a method without understanding the trade-offs.
1. Direct international bank transfer
Your client sends money from their bank to your Pakistani bank account (usually through the SWIFT network). It needs no extra account, but it can be slow, and both banks and intermediary banks may deduct fees. Exchange rates and purpose-of-payment documents also matter. It works best for occasional, larger invoices.
2. Marketplace payouts (Upwork, Fiverr and similar)
If you find clients on a freelance platform, the platform holds payment and releases it to you after delivery. You then withdraw using the options the platform supports for Pakistan. This is the simplest start, but you pay the platform's service fee and any withdrawal fees. See our guide to Upwork vs Fiverr for Pakistani freelancers for how those fees work.
3. Payment services and multi-currency accounts
Several services give you receiving details in currencies such as USD, GBP or EUR, so clients can pay as if you had a local account in their country. You then transfer or withdraw to your Pakistani bank. Compare the sign-up requirements, per-transfer fees, conversion rates and withdrawal limits before you commit. Not every service is available to residents of every country, so check eligibility first.
4. Accepting card payments from customers
If you run an online store or sell services to many small clients, you need a way to accept cards. Some major card processors are not available directly to Pakistani businesses, which is why many sellers look at registering a company in the US or UK and opening business banking and a payment account there. This option takes more setup but gives clients a familiar way to pay you.
When does a US or UK company make sense?
| Situation | Usually enough | Consider a company |
|---|---|---|
| A few freelance projects a month | Marketplace payout or payment service | Not yet |
| Regular retainers from foreign clients | Payment service or bank transfer | Maybe, if clients ask for a local entity |
| E-commerce store selling to US/UK customers | Rarely | Often, for card processing and banking |
| Agency or SaaS with foreign contracts | Sometimes | Often, for contracts, invoices and banking |
A company brings extra work: registration, an agent, ongoing filings, bookkeeping and tax obligations in more than one country. Get advice before you decide.
Checklist before you choose
- What are the total fees: sender, platform, intermediary and withdrawal?
- How long does a payment take to reach your Pakistani bank?
- Does the provider accept residents of Pakistan?
- What documents will your bank ask for when funds arrive?
- Are you keeping invoices and records for tax purposes?
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way for a beginner to get paid by foreign clients?
Working through a freelance marketplace is the simplest start, because the platform handles invoicing and releases payment to you. Direct bank transfers and payment services are alternatives once you have your own clients.
Do I need a US LLC to get paid from the US?
No. Many freelancers get paid without one. A company becomes useful when you sell to many customers, need card processing, or clients require a local business entity.
